Author Profile: Marissa Meyer, Writer of the Lunar Chronicles

FairestLast night I had the opportunity to hear Marissa Meyer discuss her science fiction/fantasy series, The Lunar Chronicles at The King’s English book store in Salt Lake City, Utah. My time was well spent as Meyer is very charming and funny.

Meyer warned that after reading Fairest: Levana’s Story, Meyer’s latest in The Lunar Chronicles series, readers may start to have sympathy for Queen Lavana. She said that there is a lot in Fairest that will help readers understand more of what will happen in the concluding book of the Lunar Chronicles, Winter (coming Fall 2015).

Lots of attendees wanted to know where Meyer got the inspiration for many of her Lunar Chronicles characters. My favorite was how she came up with the idea of having Cinder be a cyborg.

“I was falling asleep one night,” Meyer said, “and had a dream about Cinderella. There was her big dress, and the clock striking midnight, and Cinderella was running down the steps, but instead of her slipper falling off, her foot fell off… I woke up and said, she’s a cyborg!’

Another interesting one was the inspiration for Captain Carswell Thorne: “Han Solo, of course. Him and Mal Reynolds (Firefly). When I knew I wanted to write a sci-fi fantasy, I knew I had to have a sexy, arrogant, spaceship captain.”

Marissa Meyer SigningMeyer informed us that Winter is going to be 800 pages long! She said about the character Winter, as a result of not using her glamour, ‘is slowly going completely crazy…which was really fun to write.” Meyer followed this with maniacal laughter.

As Meyer signed my copy of Fairest, she told me that she’s currently working on a couple of manuscripts for books for after the Lunar Chronicles, including one about the Queen of Hearts from Alice and Wonderland. Can’t wait!

If you ever get the opportunity to attend a Marissa Meyer event, I encourage you to take it! Meyer is very fun and interesting to listen to.

You can find my reviews of the previous installments in The Lunar Chronicles series here: Cinder, Scarlet, Cress.

Who is the Fairest of them all?

Pure evil has a name, hides behind a mask of deceit, and uses her "glamour" to gain power. But whois Queen Levana? Long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress in The Lunar Chronicles, Levana lived a very different story—a story that has never been told . . . until now.
