Review | Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein

Julie and Maddie are capitalizing on the unusual opportunities afforded to women during World War II when the need for help against Germany and Hitler’s forces is badly needed. Julie becomes a spy, Maddie a pilot for the British Royal Air Force. When the two girls meet during an air raid, they quickly become best friends.

The story opens as a journal entry of sorts. Julie has been captured by the Gestapo in occupied France and has agreed to give information to them about the British War Effort. In return, she can avoid interrogation and torture. In order to avoid spoilers, I’ll avoid saying much more about the storyline.

Code Name Verity was so fantastic. It is so cleverly, and tightly written. In some respects Code Name Verity is a mystery novel. As I was reading, I could sense that things weren’t completely as they seemed and it kept me guessing as to what would happen next and what the ultimate conclusion of the book would be.

I loved the strength of the two main characters of Code Name Verity and the different voices that were used to tell the story. I also enjoyed reading a WWII book told from the perspective of a military involved woman.

Code Name Verity was awarded the Printz Honor in 2012, and the audio version of the book was superb.
